What to Expect at your Cake Smash

Cake smash sessions are designed to be easy, playful, and full of personality. Your baby will be photographed in a custom cake smash setup designed around your chosen colors, with the cake and décor included so you can simply arrive and enjoy the experience.

Classic Cake Smash Session

The Classic Cake Smash Session focuses on birthday portraits and the cake smash experience itself. We begin with portraits in the decorated cake smash setup before bringing out the cake. Then, we capture all of the fun, expressions, and reactions as your baby explores their first birthday cake.

First Birthday Experience

The First Birthday Experience combines milestone portraits and a cake smash session in one visit. We begin with a separate milestone portrait setup before moving into the decorated cake smash scene, creating a gallery filled with both classic portraits and playful birthday images.

Simple Styling that Keeps the Focus on Your Baby

Instead of heavily themed setups filled with props, sessions are styled with simple balloon garlands, banners, and classic colors designed to keep the focus on your child. Together, we’ll plan a look that ensures your baby is the star - not the scene!

How to prepare for your Cake Smash Session

  • Schedule your Session around nap time

Plan your session when your baby is well-rested and happiest. A tired one-year-old is rarely interested in photos or cake!

  • Feed your baby before the session

Yes, there will be plenty of cake, but the best cake smash sessions happen when babies arrive happy and comfortable rather than overly hungry. Think of the cake as a dessert instead of lunch.

  • Be ready for anything

Every cake smash session is different, that’s part of the fun.

Some babies immediately dive into the frosting, some cautiously inspect every bite, and some want absolutely nothing to do with the cake at first.

Before the cake is introduced, I always begin by photographing your baby in the cake smash setup without the cake to capture smiles and classic first birthday portraits.

Once we have those images, we bring out the cake and let your baby lead the experience.

If your little one is unsure about the cake, don’t worry! I have plenty of time-tested tricks.

And if your baby decides the cake is not happening? That’s perfectly OK. Some of the funniest and most memorable images come from those reactions.

  • Bring a backup outfit for you!

You might get messy. If you have a child who is really into the cake, is covered in frosting, and wants to give you a big hug…what can you do?

  • Bringing your baby’s outfit?

Perfect! Simple outfits tend to photograph best during cake smash sessions. Choose something comfortable that allows your baby to move easily and won’t feel heavy once frosting and icing are involved. Since things can get messy quickly, it’s also a good idea to bring an outfit you don’t mind getting covered in cake.
